Travelling solo is the most wonderful experience I have ever had! One of the biggest challenges is actually to make the decision and book the flight. Once you do it, this experience can change your perspective of life because…
it allows you to enjoy the destinations on your own without distractions. You do what you want, when you want. You are more self-aware. You meet locals and other travelers often and easily. You travel and spend your time with them or you spend your time alone whenever you want. You concentrate on yourself and follow your own interests, be they bungee jumping, sky diving or reading and art. Finally, the most important thing is that you feel pure freedom and happiness.
For whatever reason you’re choosing to take a solo trip, I encourage you to make the most of it.
Here are my top 10 tips for your first solo trip!
Don’t Let Your Fears DRIVE You
Fear loves us and wants what is “best” for us, and it defines “best” as “safe” and “comfortable”…but what about curiosity and passion. Everything worthwhile waits on the other side of your comfort zone. Choose a destination that you always wanted to visit, and book your ticket. It is the time for coming out of your shell!
Take Only What You Need
Before you go, lay out everything you think you need, then take the half of it! Use a backpack which you can take to the cabin and avoid baggage fees. Also, you will never wait to take your luggage back when you arrive to the destination!
Don´t Plan Too Much
If you travel on your own, you have to find and book every hostel, activity, train, bus, and flight all by yourself. I should say it is sometimes stressful but it makes sooo much fun. You are the only one who choose the places, the hours and days…It’s really exciting and I often feel better when I am in control of my own destinations.
Because I am a spontaneous person and like making last minute decisions or surprises to myself, I never book in advance and this leads me to many adventures with many new people. Booking the first night would be enough!
Stay in Hostels
Hostels are one of the best places to meet travelers and also to get information or new ideas for your trip. Doesn´t matter how old you are, who you are, hostels have the right vibration for all solo travelers. If you need your privacy or comfort, book a hotel room and you can go to backpackers’ hostels only to grab a bier at its bar and meet so many interesting people from all around the world.
Be A Local Not A Tourist
Listen, watch and blend in! You’ll be able to observe so much more of your host country. Dress the way locals dress. That can also lead to friendly encounters or good conversations with locals.
Smiling is the best way to meet new people.
So, needless to say that if you smile at someone, they will most probably smile at you back. Because you both smiling, there will be a positive platform to build the conversation on. A smile is also the most memorable feature after you meet someone for the first time.
Get out of your room and get lost on the streets! You’re here to see the world— check out everything interesting along the way.
If you want to do it with people, join a walking tour of your hostel, or go to a local restaurant, then you will definitely find a company.
Travel With New Friends
Manytimes on the road you meet a group of people you really get along with. If they asked you to join them, do it! Even if they are going to another direction, this new adventure can lead you to new places with unforgettable memories.
Spend Time Alone
You’ve made it! You are in a place where you have never been before. Take a deep breath and relax. It’s also a good time to think and reflect. Don’t be afraid of being alone. It may help you to understand who you are, what you want, and what really makes you happy.
Don´t Get Drunk
You are the only one who is responsible for yourself. No one will care for you or protect you like a best friend or family. Especially as a female traveler, you may get many free shots or drinks. Stay within your safe limits.
